The Art and Music Corner
It is my great pleasure to announce that the next musical performance will be entitled “Songs of the Mountains”. All 2nd and 3rd graders will perform Thursday evening, March 10th. We studied world music last Spring, so this year we decided to take it back to our roots! All grades are currently participating in an Appalachian unit where we learn about songs, dances, and instruments surrounding the Appalachian/mountain culture. So far we have clogged to “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” sang out hearts out to “Rocky Top,” and so much more! Please be on the lookout for more information regarding the upcoming performance and art show that we are so very excited to put on for you.

Creativity is flowing in the art room this semester! We have so many awesome projects in the works. Our 5th grade students have been experimenting with plaster wrap. They have done a wonderful job helping each other cast their hands. Next week we will be painting them! Our 4th grade students are currently working hard on a 2 point perspective project. They are learning how to use horizon lines and vanishing points to create depth in their artwork. Both of our 3rd and 2nd graders are preparing for the upcoming art show. Their artwork plays on the Appalachian folk music theme. I’m so proud of the progress they are making on their country road drawings and Cubist musical instruments. Our 1st graders are learning all about Van Gogh and how he used color to express his feelings in his self-portraits. So far the students have learned how to draw their faces proportionately. We have been using mirrors to learn how to draw the hairline and to create different facial expressions. Our Kindergarten crew has been learning about murals created by the artist, Chris Uphues. He incorporates bold lines, colorful flowers, and funny heart faces that bring joy to anyone who sees his work. We’ve been working on large paper to get the “feel” of what it would be like to create a mural. Their heart art is turning out great! I can’t wait for you to see their final masterpieces!
